The ritual is supposed to be concluded when six of the seven heroic spirits are defeated and their essences used to power a magical vessel known as the holy grail – something then powerful enough to grant ‘miracles’.

These heroic spirits are known as Servants and each are bound to a mage known as a Master. It and related spin-off media like Fate /Zero and Fate/Extra, are concerned with an event called ‘The Holy Grail War’ typically taking place in modern day Japan: a magical ritual designed to entrap seven heroic spirits (heroes and great people from myth recorded by the world to defend humanity from extinction – examples include King Arthur and Hercules). In one of those ‘hey, I really could run an RPG based on X’ moments, I’ve been inspired to try and run a Fate/Stay Night-esque game using the Strange Fate system.įor those unfamiliar with the series, Fate/Stay Night was originally a visual novel produced by the Japanese developer Type-Moon.
